When does basketball season start?
Oh. My. God.
Given the personnel losses - for whatever reason - that have occurred since last fall, I entered this college football season expecting the Louisville Cardinals to be in a rebuilding mode. I had no idea. It appears to be a total teardown rather than a remodel.
Today's 27-2 (!) loss to Kentucky at Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium was one of the worst exhibitions of alleged major college football that I've ever seen. That's three and a half hours of my life that was completely wasted, and you can be sure that the powers that be at ESPN will not be looking to televise many Louisville games next year if this is the type of performance that can be expected.
In case you did not watch the game (and good for you if you didn't), here are some of the lowlights:
- The (formerly) high-flying Cardinals accumulated just 205 total yards (53 rushing), its lowest total in almost six years.
- The offense failed to score any offensive points for the first time in eight years.
- Five turnovers led directly to 21 Kentucky points.
- Quarterback Hunter Cant-Throw-Well threw three interceptions and fumbled once. The fumble and one of the picks were both returned for scores.
- Louisville had a field goal blocked and was twice penalized for having 12 men on the field in crucial situations that kept Kentucky drives alive.
That was certainly not what any Cardinal fan expected. Perhaps UofL athletic director Tom Jurich ought to hold up just a bit on the stadium expansion. If this keeps up, the current stadium will have plenty of empty seats for upcoming games.
