Louisville Women Grab No. 2 Seed in C-USA Tourney

UofLSports.com: "After clinching their second straight 20-win season with a 61-58 victory over Cincinnati Friday night, the University of Louisville women's basketball team claimed the No. 2 seed in Thursday's Conference USA Tournament in Charlotte.

"In Friday's quarterfinal round, No. 1 DePaul will take on the winner of the ECU/Memphis game at 1 p.m. and No. 4 TCU will face the winner of the USF/Southern Miss match-up beginning at 3:30 p.m. No. 3 seed Houston will take on the winner of the Charlotte/Cincinnati game at 6 p.m., while No. 2 Louisville will close out Friday night against the winner of the Marquette/UAB contest at 8:30 p.m. (All Times Eastern)."

Louisville 53, Memphis 44

A win is a win - no matter how ugly it is.

If you are a Louisville fan and managed to stomach watching 2 hours and 15 minutes of some of the worst shooting you are ever going to observe from a Division I college team, at least you were rewarded with a hard-fought 53-44 comeback win.

In a game where defense was the order of the day, the Cardinals (24-4, 12-2 Conference USA) held Memphis without a field goal for the final 14:26. The Tigers shot an unbelievably low 19.6% from the field, including 1-23 from beyond the three-point arc.

U of L now gets a shot at its first (and last) C-USA regular-season championship when Charlotte (21-4, 12-2) visits Freedom Hall on Thursday.

Ohio's Loss Is Kentucky's Gain

UPS announced an $82.5 million expansion at its Louisville air hub, accepting a $20 million incentives package from Kentucky a day after the shipping giant served notice of plans to close its freight sorting hub in Ohio.

A new 785,257-square-foot heavy freight facility will be added to the existing Louisville operations next to Louisville International Airport.

The expansion will create 720 new jobs initially, with an estimated annual payroll of US$12 million. The operation's work force is expected to reach 400 full-time and 600 part-time jobs within 10 years after the hub opens. The shipper already employs about 7,000 people at its Louisville hub, its largest.

Louisville 61, Cincinnati 58

In the regular season finale for both teams, the Louisville Cardinals defeated the University of Cincinnati 61-58 Friday evening at Cardinal Arena.

The victory, the Cardinals' 20th of the season (20-7, 11-3 Conference USA), was spurred by 15 points and seven rebounds from Jazz Covington. Missy Taylor and Katie Olson each added 12 points.

Louisville will return to the hardwood next week in the 2005 Pepsi Women’s Conference USA Tournament. Their opponent will be determined when the tournament brackets are released on Sunday.

Confederate Monument Causes Controversy

The Confederate Monument has stood at the intersection of Second and Third Streeets at the northwest corner of the UofL campus since 1895.

Erected for the then princely sum of $12,000 by the Kentucky Women's Confederate Monument Association, the 70-foot-tall commemorative honors the rank and file of Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. It contains statues of three Confederate soldiers and the seal, along with inscriptions dedicated to Southern soldiers.

For some years now, the monument has been regarded as a politically incorrect anachronism in Louisville, with periodic calls for its removal. This week, the Rev. Louis Coleman, executive director of the Justice Resource Center, once again threw down the gauntlet to the city.

In a letter sent Monday to Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, Coleman asked that the Monument be moved to a museum, as "[a] statue of this nature does not belong in the middle of a roadway that connects to a college that boasts on its diversity."

The Greening of Louisville

This effort builds upon the groundwork laid by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted over a century ago, and will complete Louisville's transformation into a City of Parks. "

"Through a significant public/private partnership, several organizations -- including Metro Parks, Louisville Metro Government, 21st Century Parks, Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Future Fund, and the Trust for Public Land -- are working together to acquire land that will eventually become an interconnected system of parks every bit as vital as Cherokee, Iroquois, Shawnee and Chickasaw Parks. The City of Parks initiative also creates a 100-mile hiking trail around Louisville Metro's perimeter that will tie together Louisville's diverse parks and neighborhoods."

Renowned gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who committed suicide in his Woody Creek, Colorado home last weekend, was among other much more interesting facts, a native of Louisville.

Louisville 84, St. Louis 66

The University of Louisville Cardinals improved to 23-4 (11-2 Conference USA) on Sunday afternoon with a much-needed blowout win over the St. Louis Billikens at Freedom Hall. The victory vaulted Louisville to the team's most regular season wins since the 1993-94 campaign and tied a school record for most victories in C-USA play.

The victory, coupled with last week's nail-biter at Marquette, allowed the Cardinals to climb one spot to No. 11 in the latest Associated Press basketball poll.

Louisville is off until Saturday night, when they visit Memphis, seeking revenge for the humiliating home court loss suffered to the Tigers earlier this month.

Louisville 80, Southern Mississippi 65

UofLSports.com: "Louisville (18-7, 9-3 Conference USA) used a 15-4 run midway through the second half to defeat Southern Miss 80-65 in front of a capacity crowd at Cardinal Arena on Friday night. Sophomore sensation Jazz Covington led all scorers with 26 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for her third straight double-double. Junior point guard Jessica Huggins scored a career-high 25 points, connecting on a career-high six three-pointers. Shannon Stueber led the Lady Eagles with 21 points."
